These Cichlid stones are made of ceramic.They are durable and will remain unchanged for hundreds if not thousands of years. Some people love the algae to grow on them as it grows on everything in an aquarium. If you want to clean the algae off them you need only to take the stone or other ornament you need only to remove it from the aquarium and scrub it with come salt, rinse it off and return it. You do not need to wash the inside of the stones; any bacteria that is on the interior surface is good for the aquarium and should be left there.
